Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury was a famous writer in Bengali literature. His original name was Kamadaranjan Ray. He was also an entrepreneur, painter, composer and technologist.
He was born in the year 1863 in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. His father was a scholar of multiple languages. He was adopted by Harikishore at the age of five. Harikishore named him as Upendrakishore Raychaudhuri.
He wrote several books for children. Some of his famous books are: "Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne"(Bangla: গুপী গাইন বাঘা বাইন), "Ţunţunir Boi"(Bangla:টুনটুনির বই), "Cheleder Ramayan", "Cheleder Mohabharot" etc. He also wrote two books on science. "Sekaler Katha" which describes geological history of earth and “Aakasher Katha" which is a book of astronomy.
In 1913, he first published the famous children’s magazine Sandesh. He was also an inventor of several techniques of halftone blockmaking. He died in 1915 at the age of 52, in Calcutta.
